My mother has a long and humorous history of cooking turkeys, geese, and ducks in a very special way. What happens is this - she gets up, starts preparing things, looks in her cookbook, and then announces that she's going to put the bird in at Xo'clock, and it will be done at Yo'clock.

"Nooo!" we all howl (we all being me, mostly, and sometimes Dad and Erik, if they're around when Mom makes her announcement). "Don't you remember last year? Or the year before? Or any year? The bird always takes at least two hours longer than you think it will! ALWAYS!"

Mom laughs, and reads the "this is how long it takes to cook a bird weighing ___" section in her cookbook, again, and repeats that if she puts the bird in at Xo'clock, it will be done by Yo'clock!

And then about three hours after Yo'clock, when the bird is actually done cooking, we eat!

So, early this afternoon, we were cleaning out the fridge and freezer in preparation for starting the cooking for this party Mom and Dad are having. There was a goose in the freezer. We decided the best way to cope with it was to cook it. We could have it for dinner! Like a holiday, for no good reason! Neat!

It's now 11:35 pm. The goose is not yet done.

We ate sandwiches from the local deli for dinner. And you know what? They were very tasty!

ETA: Apparently, this topic is a repeat. I don't seem to have written before about the time she made a pork roast that didn't get finished until midnight, though.

Off-topic, I'm afraid, oh queen of writers_orgasm

A cut-up of Stephen Fry reading Harry Potter (http://www.luckykazoo.com/media/2006/10/harry-potter-and-underage-blow-job.html). Most definitely NOT safe for work.

Oh my goodness. So, I just got out of the shower, you see, and I was crying. You know, heaving sobs kind of crying, and you and your crazy family made me giggle just now. Thank you very much for that.

Oh, honey! I'm glad that my mother and her culinary fowl issues made you laugh.

The goose finally came out of the oven about twenty minutes ago, btw. ;-)

I had a little bit, and some fresh bread my dad had made. I think most of it is destined to be eaten in sandwich form tomorrow, though, really.

Yikes! At my mom's we usually just eat a 1/2 hour late, and that's usually because she makes a gazillion other dishes that have to bet put in bowls and arranged on the table. She's a pro at the turkey thing.

If the goose had been done on time you could have had a Canadian Thanksgiving! That's what I did last night.

Well, I did get to eat a little bit before midnight. But that was "before midnight, Tucson time", so it might not count.
