After the Girl-Wonder.org forum thread and [livejournal.com profile] dryponder's meme, I wanted to try putting together a new costume for Supergirl. I can't draw, though - so I did one of my half-assed OoaK dolls, instead!

My idea was to put together something that looks a little more modern, is comfortable and practical, and might appeal to an actual teenager. I went with a sort of motorcycle-leather inspired look, swapping out a red jacket for the usual cape, shiny blue pants for the usual skirt, red sneakers instead of boots (which would be the one part that's not motorcycle-inspired), and a tank top with the iconic symbol on it to tie the whole thing together into a recognizeable whole:

Close-up on the top, showing Supergirl's neat little ribbon choker (a girl's gotta have some style):

Here you can see the shoes a little better:

The view from the back shows the hairstyle I chose. I wanted her hair to be pulled back from her face, so it wouldn't get in the way while she's kicking villain butt:

And here's a pic with the jacket off, so you can see her tank top a little better:

If it were me flying around and fighting crime, I'd probably want a higher-necked top, and my belly covered - but Supergirl is a teenager (and I'm not positive that I ever was - I'm definitely not one now), and I thought a tiny sacrifice of practicality for trendiness made sense for the character.

Anyway, that's my Supergirl OoaK! I may take some more photos tomorrow, if I get a chance, so that I can not use the flash, and get truer colors.

Are you officially doing doll commissions now? Adriana might need something. ;)

Meh, you know how I am. I'll take on projects pretty much any time, but I refuse to give time frames for when I'll be finishing them... :-P

Which isn't a big deal, since Adriana's way too young to play with fashion dolls, and will be for the next couple of years. ;-) If you wait until she's old enough to really appreciate a custom doll before comissioning one, though, my skills will have improved - always a good thing!

Great job on the outfit, she does look like a real Supergirl now. I designed a superhero once, here she is:

I've actually got something special in the works just for you.

And at the rate I'm suddenly going with the dolls again, I may actually finish it soon (it's been in the "in progress" box for a long time)!

This is pretty darn awesome. Is this mostly assembled from stuff you had on hand, or did you make the clothes one-off?

I usually dress my dolls primarily in pre-made stuff with slight alterations (because I am not as good at sewing as I am at mix-and-matching). In this case, the only article of her outfit that I did any significant work on was the tank top, where I painted on the S logo. The jacket and pants just had bitty clean-up tweaks, and the shoes are just as they came.

I save everything when I'm deboxing dolls, so I usually can put together a good outfit for a character I want to create without having to make much stuff on my own, or go shopping specifically for it. :-)

Thank you for that. I always thought that the pr0n!star teenager Supergirl outfits they've been using are well, over the top.

You should check out some of the entries in the meme - quite a few of them are really excellent, and even the ones where the artist has chosen to put Supergirl in a relatively brief costume, you can see that she's got personality. Which is something that the current official art kinda lacks, IMO.

Robyn, you are made of AWESOME! I love that outfit, and it is so much more practical and so much cuter than her current look. I even agree with why you chose the tank top -- she is a teen, and looking good is more important than anything else to so many of them. (Certainly more important than staying warm -- I can't count the number of teens I've seen without hats, scarves, jackets, etc. in the snow this year.)

I would want to follow the story of that Supergirl.

Teens? You should see the UNDERGRADUATES. I guess some of them are still teens, but still. I want to wrap them all in blankets and give them a stern warning about frostbite. :p

Down here, I always want to chase them around with hats and sunblock. Have they never heard of cancer? Or even sunburns?

I really like the outfit, too. Shoes are definitely an area in which I don't see any superheroine with a JOT of sense compromising--it'd be like going HIKING in stillettos, for godsakes. But a tank top, sure. And I guess she is Super Girl, so the invulnerability no doubt helps. :p

I can understand why so many superheroes and superheroines wear boots - the ankle support and a stiff sole can be really useful for lots of stuff - but heeled shoes just boggle my mind. And I dunno why more of them don't just wear sneakers. On the rare occasions that I do martial arts in plainclothes, I'm always most comfortable in running shoes. And they don't make me kick any less hard, or anything.

Wonder Girl actually wore something like this for a while, back in Young Justice--jeans, leather jacket, Tshirt, and sneakers.

It was a lot more convincing for a superhero than the funny little skirted bathing suit looking thing supergirl used to wear. (That was admittedly years ago, I have no idea what her costume is now) And a lot more convincing a fashion choice for a teen.
