I saw living to the end and had basically the same reaction as you. some very fake, forced lines. the second half was much more interesting than the first, and the plot twist you were expecting? not that interesting. the plot twist you were not expecting? very interesting.
my biggest problem actually was the misuse of the tarot card death. the death card almost NEVER means literal death: it means transformation, change, the passing away of the old and the bringing in of the new. (the new cannot arrive until the old passes away, until there is some room.)
so that was just dumb, I thought.
I think Maher did a good job with an under-written character. the conversation he has with his therapist at the end would have been much more interesting at the beginning. AND, the run-in with the football helmet was kinda precious. so.
have you seen "wedding wars" yet? Maher is in it. he plays John Stamos' lover and it's a kinda cute movie. I wish he would do something else... I think he's got some potential as an actor *and* he's PRETTY. :)
