I Hate My Neighbor

The first words I spoke yesterday were:

Excuse me. My front porch, like many porches, is private property. You need to sit somewhere else.

Today it was:

Excuse me. This is private property - it's a residence. You can't sit here.

Somehow, these people always act like I'm the one being rude when their noisy chatter right outside my bedroom window hauls me out to the front porch in my pajamas. Jeez.

I haaaaaate the rental space next door. More accurately, I hate the management. How hard is it to explain to renters that they have to keep their people off the surrounding property? How hard would it be to stop by once or twice during long events, and make sure the renters are sticking to the rules you have (presumably! Perhaps you haven't) laid down for the use of the space? HOW HARD IS IT to either install some sound-dampening insulation, or else refuse to rent the space to loud dance parties??

I would not think these things are hard. The evidence of none of them happening, ever, would suggest otherwise, I guess.

Once I'd gotten all the way up today, I blasted some my iTunes "loud mood" playlist and went out in the backyard to strip the faces off some Barbies I'm gonna repaint, which did make me feel better. Not least because anyone wanting to try and sit on my porch would have to put up with my musical tastes.

Can you file a complaint with the police?
They'd have to contact the property owners and take issue with them as well as the renters if you did. :) at the very least, you could inconvienience them in return.

We've called the police once, when the noise level was still super-high at two in the morning, but I should do it more often.

If you do it often enough, they'll have to get the property owner to get a grip on his homies.
Also it will keep those j-holes in line.

Most rental companies in my experience do nothing but paperwork. I've been advised to report things like that to the police because "we don't do anything about that". Guess if the market's in your favor, you can just do nothing and collect money. This is when I wish for socialism. /eyeroll

I see nothing wrong with calling the police. They're trespassing. In some areas, you'd still have the right to shoot 'em, I think.

I talked to the owner/manager guy once for a long time about my concerns - he said they were gonna install some soundproofing, be more clear that people shouldn't be using the side door, yadda yadda yadda. He acted like he had some authority/ability to make stuff happen.

But, yeah, calling the police when things get stupid over there is probably the thing I should be doing.

Let me guess, she wanted a "private place" for a cell phone conversation she didn't want to have inside...and of course the fact that her neighbor might MIND didn't enter into her thoughts...she probably even got mad that you called her on her rudeness.

Oh, I get that one all the time.

The people I snarled at this weekend were both groups of three sitting on my porch and having a snack, though. There was some kind of crazy week-long yoga seminar going on next door, and every time they took a break, all these slender, fit people with rolled up mats in little bags would wander over into my yard and start drinking bottled water.

It was both very bizarre and very irritating.

Ugh, that's absolutely ridiculous. When I see people like that, I often wonder from under what rock these people crawled. I had a similar experience at my old house, people would randomly sit on our front lawn. Stupid, and rude.

It just weirds me out. What kind of person goes and sits on someone else's porch without permission? It's so weird!

I was gonna assume it was some kind of inner-city group that's used to everyone sitting on everyone else's stoops or something until I got to the part in the comments about superslim yoga people.

Them folks ain't got no excuse, because I'm quite certain it's not a cultural thing for them.

Nope, it's just rudeness and thoughtlessness. I'm pretty sure they just don't realise that my house is a house - they've got it in mind that they rented out the whole space, and they figure that means the alley and the nicely landscaped adjoining yard, too, or something.
