First Day of School
Jan. 12th, 2005 01:53 pmWell, this is... weird. I haven't had this long a break between classes since I was a freshman and lived on campus.
I hurried home, zapped myself some lunch, shovelled it in and then...
I still have another hour before I have to go back to campus. So eerie.
Anyway, the first meetings of my three earlier classes went pretty well. Prof. Soren, unfortunately, seems to be as fond of puns as my friend
ourobouros, but I think I'll survive. The lecture hall is not terribly crowded, at least, and he started off the class by complaining about _Gladiator_. I'm sure we'll be getting along -just fine-...
Prof. Vivante also complained about bad films, in the first meeting of my Homer course. Her bad film of choice was, of course, _Troy_. I thought it was rather awful, on many levels, but I do have to disagree with her on one point. Where she feels that Brad Pitt was mis-cast, I feel that without him in the role of Achilles, and that excellent butt-shot, the movie would have had no redeeming features whatsoever.
The anthropology gen-ed was more depressing. The class is huge, and they've got us crammed into a tiny little room in the Haury building, with no sound amplification and elderly projection equipment. It's not really a lecture hall, but it's being treated as one. Prof. Pike seems very enthusiastic, at least. Also, she is a seriously snappy dresser. But she's not, from what I can tell, much of a public speaker, and the majority of the class is made up of people who clearly don't want to be there. So while Prof. Pike was doing a rather poor job of making herself heard and keeping her lecture moving, the students were all doing a really good job of ignoring her and distracting each other. This is a problem that's been constant in all of my NATS classes. Personally, I think it's kind of mean to make science people teach large groups of uninterested kids... It's like forcing English majors to socialize without a structured event. People flounder. They can't figure out how to be effective.
Anyway, at least it's my last one. I should've gotten those NATS courses out of the way sooner...
In happier news,
mattmatt did a really humorous re-write of the dialogue to my "favorite" Jack Chick tract... Y'all should check it out here.
Also, those of you who follow my Valmai Hammerhand stories will no doubt be pleased to hear that walking to and from school today jogged loose several lines of dialogue for the next installment. If the thesis (ohdeargodI'msupposedtowriteathesisohcrap) doesn't eat up -all- of my time, I anticipate that the story will keep moving right along, even now that school is on again for me.
Hm. 2:07. So I just need something to keep me busy for the next fifty minutes or so, and then I can leave for class...
