Adventure!

So Jimmy and I are leaving for WisCon in about half an hour. I didn't finish all of the writing things I wanted to get done, but I guess I can do some/all of them on the road. I hope so, anyway!

Eeeee. I am both very excited, and very nervous. This will be Jimmy's and my first trip together that isn't just to his parents' house, and our first long trip where one of us is the person who has to take care of things like hotel arrangements and maps, rather than one of our parents. Wish us luck. ;-)

I expect lj posting to be somewhat erratic for the next two weeks, but I'm sure that we'll be stopping at internet cafes and so on periodically, so I don't think I'll disappear completely.

And, and, and... I've gotta stop typing and get dressed!

Jimmy and I have completed the first leg of our journey, and are in Albuquerque for the night. Earlier today, though, just outside Truth or Consequences, we got hit by a flying road sign.

Seriously, could I make something like that up?

Here's how I explained it to [livejournal.com profile] mattmatt, just now:

Me: we were driving along on the freeway
Me: and it is super-windy today
Matt: Right
Me: and they have a bunch of road signs out, warning about the possibilities of high winds, ironically
Me: and some of them are temporary, and they're on these little tripod stands with springs so they flop around in the wind and don't get knocked down
Me: well, one of them broke
Me: it was on the left side of the road, and then it was just suddenly airborne
Me: Jameson braked and swerved, but we were going about 75, and he couldn't avoid it entirely
Me: so it slammed into the far right side of the car, and tore off the side-view mirror
Matt: holy shit
Matt: I'm so glad that's all it did
Me: me too
Me: it would have hit the windshield right in front of me if Jimmy hadn';t reacted as fast as he did
Matt: yay Jimmy!
Me: indeed

Here's a picture of the damage, which I took in the McDonald's parking lot in Truth or Consequences. By the time I had finished clicking the shutter on the camera, my shoes were full of sand. It is the windiest day evar, omg.
