It's about 100 degrees out there, and overcast enough that the swamp cooler isn't functioning right now.

Thank goodness that I don't have any roommates or anything!

It's the preferred way to wander around houses!

When the outdoor temperature is GREATER than body temperature...yes.

Gah! In that kind of weather I'd be lying on the floor clutching an ice pack.

It's not so bad!

Ok, it is, but at least it's temporary.

I probably should have asked this when you could actually explain it to my face (so I have a better chance of understanding) but can you explain to me how the swamp cooler works?

There's a wikipedia article with a handy diagram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaporative_cooler

That was rather interesting, thank you. Do you prefer it to air conditioning, or is it just the more affordable option, or would you switch if you had the choice?

It is cheaper to swamp cool than to air condition, in Tucson, and there are a few other nice things about using the evaporative cooler. Chief among them is that it helps to keep your house humid during the drier part of the summer, which in turn can help to keep all of your skin attached to your body, which I'm in favor of!

They pretty much don't work at all during the weeks of the monsoon season, though, and so I often wish that I had a dual swamp-cooling/air-conditioning system.

Hey, me too! Though I've never cared much about roommates or not. I figure if I can walk around nearly naked at the pool, I can certainly do it at home.

Stay cool!

That makes sense. My only experience with long-term roommates was in a dorm, where near-nekkidity was problematic for a host of reasons even beyond my roommates being far more modest than myself.

I was doing that last weekend when our a/c went out. Sometimes you just got to get nekkid.

I don't know how you survive without A/C. It's barbaric!
