My mother has a long and humorous history of cooking turkeys, geese, and ducks in a very special way. What happens is this - she gets up, starts preparing things, looks in her cookbook, and then announces that she's going to put the bird in at Xo'clock, and it will be done at Yo'clock.

"Nooo!" we all howl (we all being me, mostly, and sometimes Dad and Erik, if they're around when Mom makes her announcement). "Don't you remember last year? Or the year before? Or any year? The bird always takes at least two hours longer than you think it will! ALWAYS!"

Mom laughs, and reads the "this is how long it takes to cook a bird weighing ___" section in her cookbook, again, and repeats that if she puts the bird in at Xo'clock, it will be done by Yo'clock!

And then about three hours after Yo'clock, when the bird is actually done cooking, we eat!

So, early this afternoon, we were cleaning out the fridge and freezer in preparation for starting the cooking for this party Mom and Dad are having. There was a goose in the freezer. We decided the best way to cope with it was to cook it. We could have it for dinner! Like a holiday, for no good reason! Neat!

It's now 11:35 pm. The goose is not yet done.

We ate sandwiches from the local deli for dinner. And you know what? They were very tasty!

ETA: Apparently, this topic is a repeat. I don't seem to have written before about the time she made a pork roast that didn't get finished until midnight, though.
