So I totally fell in love with that stray dog, but no one came forward as owner (at this point, seeing as how she was covered in ticks, and acted like she'd never been in either a car or a building before, I think she probably has been living on the street all along), and I don't have facilities for a dog, so Mom and I took her to the Humane Society today.

We were pretty broke up about it. She made quite an impression on us both, which is saying a helluva lot, because I actually really do not like dogs, generally.

So then Dad realised how attached I was to her, and he said that if I want, I can get her a doghouse and stuff and she could live in their backyard (which my little guest house shares).

I could totally call the Humane Society tomorrow and ask if I can adopt her when she's been through their system - people do that often enough that it's on their FAQ.

But, dog! Big responsibility!

But, but, this dog! This totally wonderful, fated-feeling dog!

Well, damn. What am I gonna do?

She's amazingly beautiful. I'd love her to death.

Word of warning though - she looks like she might have some American Bulldog in her maybe. She could get big and/or aggressive with other dogs if that's the case.

She's gorgeous. If she'd get to spend lots of indoor time with you curled up asleep at your feet, then adopt her. If she's going to spend most of her time in a doghouse, don't.

I want her. :/

She is almost certainly at least part bulldog. Bulldog/boxer is what they were guessing at the Humane Society. She's very young, though, and supposedly if you start training them early and socializing them with other dogs, people, and animals, the breed's natural protective instincts don't develop into real aggression.

She would probably not spend much time curled up at my feet until a) I move into a larger house and/or b) she gets along well with the cats. We would most likely spend more of our time together on walks or playing than cuddling. I'm lucky enough to work at an office where people are totally pet-crazy, though, so I might even be able to bring her to work with me sometimes, if obedience training went over well.

Whether I'd be able to spend enough time with her on a daily basis is the biggest concern, really - everything else can be worked around.

I am going to have a hard time sleeping on this decision!

I hate seeing dogs go to the Humane Society. I do hope you take her! But yes, do make sure that you are able to spend enough time with her. It seems that above all else, dogs just hate to be lonely.

Well, she's so personable that I'm sure that someone will adopt her. The big question is whether I ought to be that someone... Augh!

Hey, it's Jaron
My advice would be to SLEEP ON IT!! I can't stress that enough. My sister got a dog the day she saw it at the humane society, and sure she might have been a nice dog at first, but she has morphed into a one-headed cerberus. Just don't act impulsively and you'll be fine.

Hey Jaron! I friended your journal. :-)

Yeah, I spent a few days taking care of her, and I'm trying to take my time on this decision, too... Waiting is always the best advice, with pets.

Dogs provide good incentive to exercise :)

She may have some bulldog in her... but if she also has boxer, they're sweet.

Ultimately, of course, it's your choice, but dogs can be so great. And if she's young (even a few years old is fine), training will probably go pretty well.

(And, as previously stated, Sasha will always be available as a playmate ^^)

She's probably under a year old.

I'll hold you to that about doggie playgroups if I decide to adopt her!

I do! I hope that this is unrelated to the dog question, though.

Dogs are expensive. Dogs are also stypid. I love my dog, but my parents just spent $1000 (and it was very nearly much more than that) on Max because he swallowed a rock. (He's better now.)

They're also a lot of fun. So if you can accept the above then I'd say you're ready to have one!

And by stypid I also mean stupid.

*nod* my father's dog, Wyatt, has had multiple back surgeries. My own cats have had their share of ridiculously expensive vet visits. I'm sort've resigned to the costs of pet ownership.

Haven't made up my mind yet about the stupid.

I agree with the person that said sleep on it.

Christy showed up at my work 7 months (OMG, has it really been that long?!) ago. I fell in love with her immediately. Since then my lifestyle has changed drastically. I have many times considered trying to find her another home. I am just not there enough, spending enough time with her. Of course everytime I get to that point in my thought processI find time to go be with her.

Dogs are WAY different than cats. A LOT more work and more money. But, she has had such a positive effect on my life. I am definitely a cat person, but all of my family members were dog people. We always had a dog, so a part of me is a dog person.

You do have the benefit ofyour parents being right there and it sounds like your mom definitely likes her so you would have other people around giving her attention as well. I live alone and the few people that I have visiting me are not at all into playing with Christy.

You also have the other people who have offered to have their animals visit. I would be delighted to bring Christy over to play.

And then maybe I would actually hang out with you in person, since it's been since March/April (?), that one night I met you. :)

Yeah, I think Mom would be happy to play with her, if not to clean up after her. ;-)

If I decide yes on the dog, we should definitely get them together! What size/age/temperament is Christy? My friend [livejournal.com profile] moon_fox has a medium-sized young dog who is very friendly and very, very active - she could definitely use some playmates. Maybe we could arrange to take them all to parks together periodically, or something.
