Unless you're going to have your dress made you can put off looking for one (unless it's just for fun of course). Most places you go to won't do alterations until 3-4 months prior to your date and you also have to think about seasonal collection changes. I chose my dress almost a year before my wedding and had a killer time finding it once it was time to buy and alter it. I'd say put off dress shopping until February/April unless you're willing to buy the dress now and find an independent seamstress to alter it later.

Feel free to kick me for giving too much advice. I've got nothing better to do today. :p

I'd be ok with buying now and hiring a seamstress later. I want to start shopping now partly because it's one of the few things I can do before we set a date and choose a venue and all, partly because this is the time of year we're going to get married, and shopping in the spring might make finding a seasonally appropriate gown problematic, and mostly because I have some fear that I'll start shopping now, but not find anything that flatters me until February/April.

Srsly. I am funny-shaped.
