revena: Cartoon of woman with text: I knew that was going to happen (Tamar - I Knew)

I was talking to Jameson about the "set/step" thing last night, and then observed after a while that I was feeling logy, which got me an immediate "wtf?" reaction. Oh, English! You never stop being hard to understand! So here are a couple of things that I say that other people around me totally don't (and often don't grok, either). I think I picked them up from my Utah-raised parents, maybe?

Yeah, I don't think you're alone in that.

"logy" I've never heard of, "hairy eyeball" I have, and "step foot" sounds like either a non-English speaker, or a ninth grader trying to write fanfic and sound all ~hand waves~, as we all did at one point and time.

I didn't know about fanfiction when I was in ninth grade. Thank god. I did write some really awful poetry, though.

"Logy" is one I've never heard before. How interesting!

My mom says it a lot, but I don't know that I've heard it from anyone outside my immediate family.

I would say "with hostility" rather than "dubiously," but I have a sense of the word.

Yeah, that's probably a better definition, really.

I've heard/used both words, but I didn't get 'em from my Utah forebears. I heard "logy" on The Simpsons, and read "hairy eyeball" in a book once, about the time I started hearing "stink eye" used in the same sense.

The Simpsons, eh? The finest in educational television! ;-)

Yeah, that's how I pronounce it.

Also, hey! Long time no see!

I only know "logy" from the Simpsons. I can't remember hearing anyone use it around here. I do hear "hairy eyeball" occasionally, though.

"Logy" definitely isn't just a Utah thing. I've heard it plenty, and I live in Vermont. EtymOnline says it might be from Dutch "log, meaning heavy or dull."
